Malawi Institute of Education

Malawi Institute of Education (MIE) was established in 1979 by an Act Parliament. It became fully operational in April 1982. The Institute fulfills the social function of ensuring quality education. It employs 190 individuals, 31 of which are professional and the rest fulfill clerical, technical and secretarial duties.

To be a progressive, dynamic, effective and efficient educational institution, contributing to the provision of quality education in the country.

Mission Statement

The Institute is mandated by government to design, develop, monitor and evaluate the national education curriculum to ensure that it continues to respond to the present and future needs of the Malawi society.

The Institute has expertise in educational research and evaluation, educational assessment, teacher education, textbook development and documentation and information technology.

It provides a diverse range of quality services to the Ministry of Education and its constituent departments, schools, other educational establishments, and government ministries and Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs). Its mandate is implemented in collaboration with other educational institutions and NGOs in order to respond effectively to the continuing and changing individual, institutional and societal needs in the context of lifelong learning and national development.

The mandate of the Institute includes:

• Undertaking, encouraging and coordinating curriculum development, evaluation and research.
• Assisting in training of teachers.
• Providing in-service training to education personnel including teachers.
• Arranging for the publication and production of teaching and learning materials.

Some of the strengths of the Institution are:

• There is an existing Strategic Plan.
• Availability of competent professional and support staff.
• Availability of infrastructure to carry out its activities.
• MIE receives a steady government funding for support of staff and some of its activities
• It has support and respect of its clients and observes good governance principles and promotes participatory decision making with the guidance and support of its board of governors.
